Barcodes are machine-readable patterns used in retail, inventory, shipping, and libraries to identify products and assets. Our free Barcode Generator creates 1D linear barcodes in five of the most widely used formats: CODE128 (general purpose, alphanumeric), EAN-13 (retail global trade items), UPC-A (North American retail), CODE39 (alphanumeric, no check digit required), and ITF-14 (shipping cartons, GS1).

Download is available as PNG (raster, great for websites and documents) or SVG (vector, perfect for print, labels, and scaling to any size without pixelation).

Format guide: CODE128 supports the full ASCII character set and is the most compact for alphanumeric data. EAN-13 requires exactly 13 digits and is used for product barcodes worldwide. UPC-A requires exactly 12 digits. CODE39 supports 0-9, A-Z, space, and -.$/+%. ITF-14 requires exactly 14 digits and encodes the GTIN-14 for outer cases.

For retail barcodes to actually scan at checkout, you will need a valid GS1 company prefix assigned by GS1 in your country. The tool generates the barcode graphic correctly but cannot grant you official numbers. For internal or private use (asset tags, warehouse labels), any unique number works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which barcode format should I choose?
For internal use or encoding text: CODE128. For products sold in stores: EAN-13 (global) or UPC-A (US/Canada) — requires GS1 prefix registration. For shipping cartons/pallets: ITF-14. CODE39 is older and less dense but still common in manufacturing and government.
Does the generator include check digits automatically?
Yes. EAN-13, UPC-A, and ITF-14 all require a final checksum digit, and our tool computes and appends it according to GS1 specifications. If you enter 12 digits for EAN-13, the 13th is computed; if you enter all 13, it is validated and re-rendered. CODE128 also includes its mandatory modulo-103 check digit internally.
Why are quiet zones (white space) important?
Barcode scanners need blank white space before and after the bars to detect the start and end of the code. EAN/UPC require at least 11 modules of quiet zone on each side. Our generated images include a safe default quiet zone, but if you trim the SVG or place the barcode on a colored background, ensure sufficient white space remains.
Can I generate QR codes (2D barcodes)?
